Purpose of Position

The Department of Art & Design at the University of North Dakota seeks a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. This is a 9-month non-tenure track position, contingent upon the availability of funding.

The Department of Art & Design offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Arts and Graphic Design, and a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts.

The successful applicant will receive a competitive salary for teaching a 4/4 load during the academic year. Courses may be a mix of face-to-face and online offerings. Students will be at both the undergraduate and graduate level in graphic design, related areas of expertise and/or art foundations. The department seeks a distinctive and collegial individual to engage in service to the department, college, university, and community. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Prepare and instruct courses assigned by the department chair.
Select, prepare, and maintain current curriculum, course outlines and printed and non-printed instructional materials.
Engage in curriculum planning and revision as needed.
Advise students as it pertains to their educational program.
Mentor and advise students through the BFA Exhibition.
Oversee the Digital Fabrication Studio.
Participate, when appropriate, in such things as schedule building, budget input, equipment and material orders, etc.
Assist in timely efforts to meet program reviews and the development and implementation of accreditation guidelines.
Keep current knowledge of developments in the field by reading industry literature, engaging in professional development activities, and networking with colleagues.
Engage in life-long learning in the areas including (but not limited to) higher education, student-centered learning, high-impact practices (HIPs), and teaching/learning new technologies.
Access to the Colonel Eugene Myers Foundation funds to bring in Visiting Artists, purchase artworks from professionals in the field, curatorial projects, etc.

Required Competencies

Ability to teach and develop a broad array of Graphic Design courses at the undergraduate and graduate (if qualified) level.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including evidence of the ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students.
Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Art & Design program.
Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery.
Ability to lift at least 30 pounds related to various teaching and service needs.

Minimum Requirements

MFA or equivalent degree in graphic design, art, or technology by August 15, 2023.
Relevant experience in the fields of Graphic Design, Digital Imaging, and Multimedia Design.
Experience teaching at undergraduate level programs.
Supervisory experience or ability to coordinate and oversee computer department labs.
Successful completion of criminal history records check

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge in the field of typography, print production, motion graphic, and/or a thorough knowledge of responsive web design and user experience design.
Experience with software and digital applications such as Video Editing, 3D Modeling, 3D Printing, social media best practices, basic audio editing, and advanced proficiency with core Adobe Creative Cloud programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, etc).
Demonstrated expertise in design in both print and digital environments in one or more of the following areas: Motion/Time-based Design, Information/Visualization Design, Emerging Media (Interaction/Experience Design: XD, UI/UX), Integrative Design, Design Thinking, or Social Design; exemplified in portfolio, CV and teaching statement.
Knowledge of the Macintosh operating system, and experience with current Design Standard version of Adobe Creative Suite — especially Adobe After Effects, knowledge of web programming standards (HTML5/CSS) as shown in the portfolio, CV and/or teaching statement.
Demonstrated proficiency in 3D media.
Experience with software and digital applications related to the courses taught.
Experience working with online instruction.
