The CDS Courses Director at the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) is responsible for planning, managing, and evaluating educational courses, workshops, programs, events, and materials that teach documentary skills and methods—in photography, audio, film/video, writing, and experimental and new media—for beginning, emerging, and professional documentary artists. In keeping with the CDS mission and priorities, the program emphasizes documentary work grounded in collaborative creation and community partnerships, in-depth fieldwork, and individual artistic practices that involve people whose story is being told in the telling itself.
Consistent with the CDS mission and strategic priorities, the CDS Courses Director will shape and lead a program focused on teaching, using, and sharing documentary tools in ways that center inclusive, equitable, and diverse experiences and perspectives—mindful of justly navigating the power dynamics inherent in doing documentary work and of intentionally increasing access to documentary resources for underrepresented groups and individuals.
Responsibilities include faculty recruitment and strategic curriculum planning for continuing education courses and a certificate program, documentary institutes and workshops, screenings and instructional discussions, and visiting documentary artist and lecture programs tied to accessible learning experiences for people of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of expertise. The CDS Courses Director works in close collaboration with the DocX Director to design and execute learning opportunities for working documentary artists seeking new skills and/or project support. The CDS Courses Director also works in collaboration with the CDS Undergraduate Education Director and other CDS program directors to offer educational opportunities that maximize and strengthen faculty and student resources. Duties involve program planning and management and administrative functions, including fundraising, budgeting, event coordination, and marketing. The CDS Courses Director supervises the CDS Courses Coordinator and reports to the Director of the Center for Documentary Studies.
