The Rights of Summer

Call for Submissions

RIPE Art Gallery   /   Deadline: 07/18/15

"The Rights of Summer" - Juried Photography Exhibition opening 8/8/15

Get your Summer experience through photos ready! Your work will be showcased alongside work from 5 established fine art photographers such as Richard Misrach, Karine Laval and 3 more to be announced! This is the Summer 2015 Competition to enter!

The title and theme "The Rights of Summer" looks at how different people, in different locals, from different socio-economic classes, celebrate Summer. Conceived by juror, Ruben Natal-San Miguel, renowned photographer, writer, photography specialist/critic, and curator, who has photographically documented summer in all five boroughs of NYC. The beaches of NYC are a conglomeration of the masses, enjoying one of their "Rites" of summer appearing to be undivided by the Socio-economic statuses which so often dictate their "Rights". The "Lazy Days of Summer" are rejoiced by the 1% in places like the Hamptons, Palm Beach, and the French Riviera, where the 99% celebrate at Jones Beach, Lake Michigan, and barbecue on the streets of Harlem.

Juried by Ruben Natal San Miguel and Sean Corcoran, Curator of Photography and Prints for The Museum of The City Of New York.

Evaluation Criteria

The curators are looking to see exceptional photography with a unique perspective and cohesive look based on the theme of "The Rights of Summer". highlighting the contrast of how different communities approach the benefits, challenges, pressure and stress, and the creative ways that make the best of the summer.

We encourage entrants to challenge themselves to excite our jurors, who have their fingers on the pulse of contemporary photography. We ask that the photography serve as a representation of how the different Rites of summer are exercised based on the Rights given to different people around the world.
