Semblance

Portraits: a fresh look

Darkroom Gallery   /   Deadline: 03/18/15

The whole of a person caught within a single frame; portraits can be reactive, didactic, contemplative and illusive.

"Semblance" refers to the outward appearance something or in this case, someone. Portraits can be especially dynamic when certain characteristics of a person are highlighted, coaxed into the light and captured as prized specimens.

Juror David J. Carol states:

"What makes a good portrait? I love August Sander, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus and many other "classic" portrait photographers. But for me a photograph of a "thing" posing in front of camera is not the only definition of a portrait. Like with all good photographs a good portrait has to first be interesting and have an opinion. By this I mean as soon as you see the picture you must be compelled to look at it for more than a moment and in some way become involved with with the image. Once the photo has your attention and I think this applies to all photography, it needs to also be either informative, mysterious, humorous, ironic, beautiful, disturbing, unusual or any combination of qualities that tells the viewer something about the photographer and/or the subject. I don't care if its film, digital, Polaroid, tintype, 4x5, 8x10, a cell phone or anything else, if it meets these requirements I'm in. I just love a good picture!"

Darkroom Gallery is calling for photographs that explore the portraiture genre. The semblance of a person can be but a whisper of true personality or a roar of honest, exuberant character.
