Photography Retreats

Flash Powder Projects hosts invite-only retreats for small groups of photographers (typically four) who are looking to to strengthen and package a portfolio of work and develop a plan to strategically launch a project.

In these four-day, five-night retreats, David Bram and Jennifer Schwartz work with participants to achieve the best edit and sequence of their work, write a powerful artist statement, develop a plan for getting exposure, tackle social media, and identify target collectors and galleries. Other topics include creative project funding, publishing, museum collections, setting editions and entering competitions.

David, Jennifer, and the participating photographers share a house for an intensive, immersive experience. Photographers are invited to participate based on their work, experience and willingness to share and explore as a group. The intimate nature of the retreat is designed to foster community and create dialog around the work, as each participant brings different perspectives and ideas. From photography professors, to commercial shooters, to MFA and PhD candidates, to photographers new to the fine art world, the retreats have hosted talented artists from all areas of the field.

The cost of the retreat is $2300 per photographer. This includes lodging, breakfast every day, and one other group meal per day, but not travel to and from the retreat. (New Mexico retreats include all meals.) A $500 non-refundable deposit is due at sign-up and the balance is due 30 days before the start date.

- goal setting and 12-month plan
- portfolio presentation and open critique
- editing and sequencing your project
- writing your artist statement
- one-on-one sessions
- alternative ideas for exposure, cultivating your own collectors
- navigating the world of portfolio reviews, online venues, juried - exhibitions and competitions
- branding through your website and social media
- photographer-gallery relationship, alternative funding ideas, museum collections and publishing
- website reviews

Location

Retreats are held in Astoria, Oregon (a coastal town two hours from Portland), Corona, New Mexico (at a secluded ranch two hours south of Albuquerque), and Highlands, North Carolina (a mountain town two hours from Atlanta).
