Online Exhibition
Shades of Consciousness / Deadline: 06/07/19
In recent years, there has been a particular emphasis on developing conversations around racial identity and injustice in American society. We are seeing a wealth of conversations about race, but minimal discussions that expand the discussions beyond black and white individuals.
For this exhibition, we are taking a look at the state of race relations in America while focusing on minority groups that are often left out of mainstream conversations about race, identity, and assmiliation. We want to see work that is challenging the idea of race in America, and invites discussions to be expanded beyond Black and White. We realize that a vast group of people have been left out of mainstream race conversations. So we want to use this online exhibition as a time to lift up the voices of those whose voices are often not heard beyond their own racial/ethnic groups. Beyond Black and White seeks to showcase the work of photographers exploring their realities and journey's through race, identity, and place beyond the emphasis of Black and White racial tensions in America. We want stories of Indigineous Peoples, Immigrants, Asian-Americans, First-Generation Americans, Pacific-Islanders, Middle Eastern, North African, etc. We want to see what artists outside of the typical conversation of black and white are making, thinking, questioning, and exploring.
Though we are working to explore a vast range of photographers working within the themes of identity, assimilation, and place outside of the focus on African American and White Americans, we still welcome those stories.
