We are excited to host this year's Midwest SPE Regional Conference! Located in the geographic center of our SPE region, we look forward to seeing members from every state in the Midwest come out in full force to Peoria, Illinois. The bulk of the programming will take place at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria. Exhibitions and receptions will take place across Peoria including at the Bradley University Galleries, Riverfront Museum, Contemporary Art Center, Prairie Center for the Arts, and Peoria Library Downtown. Hands-on workshops will be given throughout the weekend at Bradley University's Heuser Art Center. Featured speakers and exhibitions at Developing Spaces/Places include Guggenheim-award winners Penelope Umbrico, David Taylor, Wendel White, William Fox, and esteemed 2017 Midwest Regional Honored Educator Judy Natal. Call For Proposals: Developing Spaces/Places
The city of Peoria, IL will host the 2017 Midwest Society for Photographic Education Regional Conference, Developing Spaces/Places, October 12-15, 2017. Conference organizers seek proposals from image-makers, historians, curators, writers, and students with innovative photographic approaches to place/space including, but not limited to, landscape and environmental concerns, border demarcations, and spatial justice. Strong proposals outside of the conference theme will also be considered for inclusion.
Submission method: Single PDF file, containing proposal summary (artist statement or synopsis of your presentation - see below for formats and lengths), 8-10 sample images, and an abbreviated CV (3 pages or less). This combined file must be less than 10 mb and should be emailed to midwestSPE2017@gmail.com. Please use the following naming convention when naming your file: “LastName_FirstName_Title”. Please do not send multiple attachments. Image-Maker Presentations: 40 minute talk, 10 minute Q&A session on personal work
Student (undergraduate and graduate) Image-Maker Presentations: 20 minute session on personal work
Lecture: 40 minute talk, 10 minute Q&A session on an historic topic, theory, or another artist’s work
Panel Discussions: 75 minute talk, 15 minute Q&A group session led by a moderator to discuss a chosen topic
Demonstration/Guided Discussions/Workshops: 90 minute session designed to share pedagogy or professional development strategies
"Book Club" Discussions: 75 minute book club discussion on a pre-selected artist monograph or book on pedagogy, process, theory, or history.
Exhibition Proposals: solo or group exhibitions, juried or invited. May or may not include a 40 minute juror’s session in which you will discuss your curatorial theme/practices for the exhibition.
