Piter Portraits:

This body of work was completed while on residency in St. Petersburg Russia during July of 2017. My focus has been to document young people utilizing environmental portraiture.
As an educator, who works with teenagers, I am interested in the similarities and differences between the students I teach in California and the young people I meet while abroad. I have consistently documented youth since I began practicing photography over 20 years ago. I am most interested in this transitional period of self-realization that happens during our teenage years.
While in Russia, I scarcely had a daily routine or plan, most often I would wander the streets and neighborhoods looking for pockets of you people. Where do they hang out? What do they do in their free time? How do they spend their summer? These are some of the things I think about when looking for subjects. Sometimes I catch them unaware and sometimes we engage in dialogue. Often we connect with social media (Instagram) and I am given a further glimpse into their lives.
While working at the art center Pushkinskaya 10, I tried to include my subjects in the art-making process. After working for three weeks, my gallery exhibition displayed both analog and digital imagery created from four different cameras. Many of the young people I photographed showed up to the opening reception and it was an honor to see them involved with the culmination of the project.
