98.6/ Human Factors

Richard Gray's visual projects investigate the role scientific and technological imaging plays in expanding definitions of human identity and the contemporary self. The artwork presented here incorporates human cell imagery photographed using a light microscope or thermal infrared captures of the body in total darkness. First inspired by the US Govt. Human Genome Project, this work seeks a dialectic relationship between the visible and the sub-visible. Gray is particularly interested in typologies, their indexical relationship to visual systems and the cultural influence these systems have on our understanding of what it means to be "photographed." The images posted here represent several series of works completed between 2000 and present.
