about

Richard Gray is Professor Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame. He was on the faculty for 39 years and served as chairperson of the Department of Art, Art History & Design from 2012-2021. Gray taught courses in photography, video and related media and has exhibited his artwork nationally and internationally for over forty years.

Richard Gray's artistic investigations use industrial and scientific image-capture technologies to explore new ways of considering the genre and role of human representation. Gray is particularly interested in exploring portraits, their indexical connection to visual systems, and the dialectic relationships these devices connote between notions of the visible and sub-visible.

Richard is a former member of the Board of Directors (2004-2013) and served as Chair of the Board from 2007-2009. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. Richard now lives and works in Gig Harbor, WA, USA.
