The Veil

The Veil

The veil is a thin membrane that both conceals and reveals, it is a boundary between worlds, a garment that covers the head or face for reasons of protection and ornamentation. Veils are especially associated with women and sacred objects, used to honor and create social distance. There is a provocation in that which is obscured, as concealment incites the desire to reveal. The forbidden or the secret are endlessly seductive, and the unknown is both frightening and fascinating. That which protects can also cloister and isolate. When boundaries are thin we become vulnerable and it is hard to distinguish one thing from the next, yet there is power in vulnerability because it takes great courage to be tender.
