Photographs

My photographic practice is deconstructive. Through the process of making so-called straight photographs that depict presumably queer subject matter, I am interested in the artifice that surrounds this distinction between stylistic approach and the content of a photograph. By analyzing the parameters of how we present our identities through art, language, and understanding of self, we are able to more capably observe the very assumptions that formulate the qualities of identity. In doing so these phantasmal constructions have new visibility by which they can be challenged. Instead of buttressing the claims of a white, heteronormative, male past by reiterating its models and systems of thinking, queerness instead makes no claim to a stake of land, but rather to the very atmosphere that permeates it. By making use of the permeability that queerness has in relation to the discourses from which it springs, such theory and practice can quite literally be a "breath of fresh air," shocking those very
same oppressive systems of thinking while altering them and their constituent parts from the inside out. Put simply, an analysis of queerness in the form of photography becomes less about finding a stable identity in visual form and instead questions the adequacy of terms we have to describe ourselves.
