Latter-day Lewis & Clark: The History of the Future

The History of the Future is the result of two years of research and performance based image making involving the story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and its Corps of Discovery and subsequent voyage and discovery of the North West Passage and peoples inhabiting the North Western United States during a 28 month period from 1803 to 1806. The themes present in The History of the Future include, race and race relation, the romantic American West, exploration, discovery, faith, desire, and the search for The Northwest Passage linking the eastern states with the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase and to the Pacific Ocean. As I continued to read more about The Corps of Discovery I became more and more fascinated by the idea of a small army walking across the American landscape in search of the Northwest Passage. The History of the Future began as a spontaneous, exciting, satirical activity where my interest laid in creating photographs within a historical context, using costumes and performance to create what I originally titled re-revisionist history (my own take on historical events). I realized that I could use these elements of spontaneity and performance together with my interests in humor, history, culture and race, and their interpretation, to create something unique and satirical as I place a new look Lewis and Clark Expedition in the modern American Landscape. Moreover, I found that I could engender upon it personal relevance by recalling my own experiences with landscape and the American west, and by actually appearing in the photographs as I took on the character of Captain William Clark. I continued to research the story of Lewis & Clark very thoroughly and discovered a tale ripe for interpretation. I found that it contained an intriguing cast of characters, and that their chronicles (journals) were so out of the ordinary and interesting I could hardly contain myself. Over the course of two and one half years I have followed portions of the Lewis & Clark Trail from Oregons pacific coast into the Midwest regions of the Dakotas, this adventure led me through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. I continue to make photographs and am able to collect additional research materials while I focus on its completion. My creative photographic works, in most instances, are conceptually oriented. I find that I can generate more energy and interest in pursuing a creative work if it is put into the context of topics or themes for which I have familiarity. This can be accomplished through research into topics that also hold personal relevance. Such is the case with the personal work I have presented here as Salted Paper Prints.
