about

Chair of the LGBTQ Caucus at SPE. David N Martin received a BFA in Applied Photography from Northern Kentucky University, where he studied with Barbara Houghton, Barry Andersen, and Matt Albritton. He has an MFA from the University of Kentucky where he studied with Dennis "Bones" Carpenter and Ruth Adams. He is now in his last semester of an MA in Art History where his research focuses on contemporary photography. His studio work examines the relationships between reality and people's perceptions around sexuality and gender. By using self-portraiture, cataloguing, data collection, irony, and a wry sense of humour, he seeks to engage the viewer in a discourse that opens up the possibilities that relationships may not represent what they appear to. David currently teaches at the University of Kentucky in the Photography program (Traditional, Digital, and Non-Silver) and the Art History Program (Visual Studies). He also runs an active commercial photography business, where he is also the photographer for several local non-profits including the Human Rights Campaign in Cincinnati, GLSEN, and the Cincinnati Men's Chorus. David has been an educator for over 25 years. His background is as a specialist in curriculum design, curriculum analysis, and classroom delivery. He has held numerous leadership positions, both nationally and internationally, related to education, and most recently has been focused on assessment, online and physically located learning communities, student engagement and retention concepts, and building integrated content learning libraries. His education work also examines theories of how students learn and function in real world environments. He's an avid fan of food, travel, the odd Martini, and can also sing or whistle any Spice Girls song you ask him to. You can find him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/davidnmartin, twitter as @_photobloke_ and at www.dnmartin.com
