The Native Texan series of photographs are an anthropological look at the bleak but aesthetic beauty of the everyday scenes along the roadways of Southwest Texas. Having made photographs from along the side of the road every since I started to drive, my images typically capture the coexistence of natural features with the Native man-made disturbances. Growing up in Southwest Texas, the union of the flat landscape and the big sky has always been an important part of my visual vernacular. My photography also has an ongoing stimulation from the photographs of Jeff Brouws, whose work captures the social experience and cultural relevance of classic American iconography and the writing of D.W. Meinig, an American geographer who states a landscape is "composed of not only what lies before our eyes but what lies within our heads."
