To an extent, all human beings are governed by the inherent need for basic control. During some seasons of life, that need is primarily met. During other periods, however, we may find the burdens of everyday life far too heavy to bear. Some cope with chronic stress by retreating to a place that is uniquely his or her own - a place untouched by the chaos surrounding them - a sanctuary.
Inspired by my father's strength and resilience in the face of my mother's illness, I spent months photographing the space he goes to regenerate. Through this project, I found that a person's "safe place" offers a glimpse into the life and identity of that to whom it belongs. "Sanctuary" is a body of work that explores identity by bringing viewers into the private "safe place" of a stranger.
