Sign-Light: Consumer Culture in the American Landscape
Sign-Light: Consumer Culture in the American Landscape is Tianran Qin's M.F.A. thesis exhibition. Three different bodies of works that reveal the layered complexity of capitalist consumption through various of photographic techniques will be presented.
As a photographer from China, Sign-Light presents Tianran's perception and understanding of the commercialized American landscape and also discloses the inseparable connection between photography and contemporary consumer culture. Photographs help to create the desire for products, services, and lifestyles, and yet also situate consumer happiness just out of reach. Through deliberate technical and formatting choices, Sign-Light reveals the layered complexity of capitalist consumption, and illuminate the metaphorical function of light in the built environment as well as highlight the visual assault of contemporary advertising practices.
The exhibition will be on view at Sulfur Studios from May 3 to May 5. The opening reception is on Friday, May 4 from 6 - 9 pm.
