Women in the Landscape

Participating artists: Jessica Auer, Jennifer Colten, Lauren Henkin, and Dawn Roe

Organized by Lauren Henkin

The group exhibition Women in the Landscape was born out of a series of conversations between contemporary women landscape photographers on the online arts journal Tilted Arc. The purpose of the conversations – and this exhibition – is to bring attention to women photographers working in a genre of the medium populated primarily by men.

Having started as a genre predominantly practiced by men, contemporary women photographers are offering an increasingly important perspective on our engagement with nature. Women in the Landscape presents the work of four such artists. Their work spans a range of ideas from an index of humankind’s discarded fragments (Jennifer Colten) to inconsistencies between experienced and recorded time (Dawn Roe) to the study of cultural sites and how they connect place, journey and cultural experience (Jessica Auer) to the tension between preservation and extinction (Lauren Henkin).
