2019 SPE Annual Conference Anti-Harassment Policy

1. Purpose

Society for Photographic Education (SPE) is committed to an equitable and inclusive environment where all members have agency to contribute. Through our programming, annual conference, chapter events and web presence, we represent the diversity of our membership including difference in gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and religion.

This Anti-Harassment Policy outlines our expectations for all those who participate in SPE's Annual and Chapter Conferences or events as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior.

We expect all participants at SPE's conferences and events to create safe and positive experiences for everyone.

"Participant" in this policy refers to anyone present at SPE's Annual or Chapter Conferences or events including staff, contractors, volunteers, reviewers, vendors, sponsors, exhibitors, venue staff, members, and all attendees.

2. Expected Behavior

We expect all participants at SPE's conferences or events to abide by this Anti-Harassment Policy in all venues of the conferences including ancillary events and official and unofficial social gatherings.

  • Exercise consideration and respect in your speech and actions.
  • Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech.
  • Alert community leaders if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this Anti-Harassment Policy, even if they seem inconsequential.

3. Unacceptable Behavior

In support of this policy, SPE expressly prohibits offensive or inappropriate behavior including, but not limited to:

  • any unwelcome sexual advances
  • requests for non-consensual sexual favors
  • all other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual or otherwise offensive nature where (i) submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a condition of professional or financial opportunities, (ii) submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for professional decisions affecting such individual
  • such conduct has the purpose or effect of creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.
  • unwelcome conduct (verbal, non-verbal, physical) that denigrates, shows hostility or aversion toward an individual because of race, color, gender, pregnancy, national origin, religion, age, disability status, military or veteran status, sexual orientation or any other classification protected by federal, state or local law. 
  • verbal abuse, epithets, slurs, negative stereotyping and written or graphic material or jokes that show hostility, prejudice or dislike toward an individual or group.

Other harassment consists of

  • deliberate intimidation, stalking or following;
  • harassing photography or recording;
  • sustained disruption of talks or other events;
  • unwelcome and uninvited attention or contact;
  • physical assault (including unwelcome touch or groping);
  • real or implied threat of physical harm;
  • real or implied threat of professional or financial damage or harm

Conference event venues may be shared with members of the public; please be respectful to all patrons of these locations.

Exhibitors in the Exhibits Fair, sponsor or vendor booths, or similar activities are also subject to the Anti­Harassment Policy. In particular, sponsors and exhibitors should not use inappropriate activities or other material. Booth staff (including volunteers) should not create an inappropriate environment.

Remember that sexist, racist, and other exclusionary jokes can be offensive to those around you. Offensive remarks or jokes are not appropriate for SPE's conferences or events.

4. Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior

Unacceptable behavior from any participant will not be tolerated.

If a participant engages in unacceptable behavior, SPE may take any action they deem appropriate, including immediate removal from SPE's conferences or events (without refund) at which the harassment occurred and withdrawal of membership in SPE and any of its chapters. Egregious violations will result in more severe sanctions, including involvement of appropriate law enforcement officials.

5. If You Are Subject to or Witness Unacceptable Behavior

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact SPE staff immediately. On-site Staff can be identified by name badges.

 All reports are confidential.

 If possible, provide the following information, preferably in writing:

  • Identifying information (name/badge, appearance) of the participant doing the harassing
  • The behavior that was in violation
  • The approximate time of the behavior (if different than the time the report was made)
  • The circumstances surrounding the incident
  • Other people involved in or witnessing the incident

SPE staff are trained on how to deal with the incident and how to further proceed with the situation.

If needed or requested, staff will help participants contact venue security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of SPE's Annual or Chapter Conferences or events.

6. Addressing Grievances

If you feel you have been falsely or unfairly accused of violating this Anti-Harassment Policy you should notify SPE with a concise description of your grievance. Your grievance will be handled in accordance with SPE's governing policies.
