Student Portfolio Critiques and Professional Portfolio Reviews
Friday, March 13 2015 – Saturday, March 14 2015
Student Portfolio Critiques (Friday, March 13 | 9:00 am - 3:30 pm) and Professional Portfolio Reviews (Saturday, March 14 | 9:00 am - 3:30 pm)
The 2015 Professional Portfolio Reviews are FULL. Canceled and forfeited slots will be available on a first come, first served basis to conference attendees on a standby waiting list during the conference only. To be added to the standby list, you will need to see a Portfolio Review Coordinator onsite outside the Strand 12 & 13 rooms of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. "Standby" participants must be present when their name is called or forfeit their place on the list.
SPE offers organized portfolio reviews and critiques for a limited number of conference attendees. This opportunity is free of charge and uses a lottery system to match participating artists with up to two 20-minute sessions with participating portfolio reviewers.
Early conference registration is a must. During the online conference registration process, artists will be presented with the option of enrolling in either student portfolio critiques (Friday) or professional portfolio reviews (Saturday) based on SPE membership level. Once the reviews reach capacity, the registration system will indicate that the reviews are unavailable.
Registered participants in portfolio reviews will be contacted by email a few weeks prior to the conference with a questionnaire and the names, institutions, and interests of available reviewers. Participating artists will have a period of two weeks to rank their top choices for reviewers. Participants should read through the list of participating reviewers and identify their top 20 choices. Reviewers are grouped and listed in the following categories: Both (reviewers who will look at both professional and student work), Professional, and Student. Please pay attention to this information -- if you are a student and ask to meet with a reviewer who is only meeting with professionals (or vice versa), this will invalidate your request. Questionnaires must be filled out completely in order for artists to be placed. This is mandatory; if you do not submit the request questionnaire, your portfolio will not be reviewed. After the request period concludes, SPE conference coordinators will process the requests in random order and assignments will be posted by Thursday at 5:00 pm outside Strand 12 at the conference hotel. Please check the schedule to confirm your scheduled session(s) and time(s).

What if I cannot attend my scheduled session?
If you cannot attend your scheduled session, please notify a Portfolio Coordinator as soon as possible. The coordinators will be located outside the Strand 12 room at the Hyatt Regency. Reassignments will not be made and your spot will be given to an individual on the standby list. Individuals who are five minutes late for their appointment to meet with a reviewer will forfeit their session to the standby list.
SPE Reserves the right to make last minute substitutions based on the availability of participating reviewers.
- Please plan to arrive at least five minutes prior to your scheduled session time.
- All reviews will take place in the Strand 12 and Strand 13 rooms at the Hyatt Regency.
- Please note, if you plan to use a computer or tablet to share your work, be sure it is fully charged. Power sources will not be available.

SPE/MediaNOLA Community Service Project
A special service project is planned for 30 preregistered SPE members! Working closely with Tulane University's Center for Public Service, SPE has developed a service project opportunity perfectly suited for SPE's members in support of MediaNOLA. Started in the 2009, MediaNOLA encourages the preservation of collective memory by bringing together archival resources with members of the public to produce and reflect on the exceptional and ordinary people, places, and things associated with local culture.
SPE service participants will contribute to this preservation project by assisting MediaNOLA in documenting the invisible labor that goes on in New Orleans' "creative economies." The United Nations gives 9 broad areas defining creative economies worldwide (see here ). Pre-registered SPE volunteers will find people working in these areas, take pictures, annotate each image, collect release forms, and submit annotated images to MediaNOLA. MediaNOLA, Tulane and SPE have provided guidelines, maps, etc. necessary for registered participants to locate and document this work along with all the necessary forms. Participants will fan out across the city during the conference to photograph people engaging in these various economies. We look forward to seeing and sharing the results of their efforts!
Participation is limited and registration for this project is now FULL.
