Regional Information
The Society for Photographic Education's eight regional organizations
serve the special needs of their local constituencies. These groups
organize annual regional conferences each fall, creating a sense of
community within every geographic area of the United States. Like the
national conference, these programs range over a wide variety of topics
and bring together SPE members in an arena of scholarly inquiry and
fellowship. Many regional associations are active advocates and produce
their own publications and newsletters.

Northeast 2010 Conference
The Experiential in Photography
November 5 - 7, 2010
RISD Museum & The Hampton Inn Hotel
Providence, RI
Conference Chair: Bruce Myren
Our conference theme this year aims to consider the ways in which the experiential plays a role in the creation of and theorizing about contemporary photographic and related practices as well as the resulting presentation and consumption of work that engages and comments upon experience/s, broadly defined.
In addition to the normative understanding of the experiential, that of being there, the theme considers how artists use experience-their own or others-as a part of their working method to formulate and express concepts/work. For example, papers might address work that incorporates memories or the other senses, performances or series meant to understand others experiences, capturing a unique place or experience in another space/place, etc. Lastly, how does the viewer's or consumer's own experiences prior to, during, and after the presence of the work change the reception/understanding?
Please note: submissions are encouraged but not required to address the conference theme.

The 2010 Regional SPE Time for Light conference will be a collaborative meditation on the past, present, and future contributions of lens-based media to art, society, and culture. The conference invites imagemakers and theoreticians to examine and share the benefits and consequences of photography to the societies and cultures behind or in front of the lens. So that imagemakers may better understand the past, record the present, and shape the future, the MWSPE Time For Light conference will culminate in the restoration, renewal, and new discoveries of historic and post-historic photographic discourse and practice. As we move forward and look backward, the conference will convene in Kalamazoo to make and take time for light.
Special Event: Photo Fest, Kalamazoo Art Hop, October 1st: more than 60 galleries and businesses will host photography/lens-based exhibits throughout the city of Kalamazoo.

Southwest 2010 Conference: “Altering Perspectives”
October 22-24, 2010
Prescott College
Prescott, AZ
Conference Chair: Deborah Ford
“Change” was a seminal word in our last presidential election. Change may result in an altered perspective, metaphorically, politically or personally. Taking a closer look at motivations or changes within the medium of photography and photographic education while locating ourselves as photographers, artists, or educators in today’s world provides a vantage point for understanding the power of change as transformation. Taking stock of where the medium is and where it may be going gives us the opportunity to acknowledge our past and may provide insight into the gains and limitations of the current technologies. A closer look at photography’s present, gives rise to challenges while paying homage to our past traditions, heritage and mentorship. During this conference we will explore the ways that artists, activists or educators engage in socially responsible practices as a means to use the medium to inform our senses, educate or as an agent of social change.

The West region invites imagemakers, theoreticians and historians to propose papers or workshops that consider the notion of site as a place of contestation, collaboration or mediation today. The body as site, burial sites, fake sites and new landscapes, identity as site or border sites represent just some of the ways in which the theme of New Sites can be interpreted. The conference also invites educators to propose workshops or discussion groups on topics not specific to the theme. All proposals are peer reviewed by the SPE West Board.
Competitive scholarships waiving the registration fee will be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students and to adjunct lecturers. Visit www.spewest.org for submission information and details.
