MM Robinson & Kelly Maron: The Impossibility of Saying Anything
March 25, 2006 - April 22, 2006
"The Impossibility of Saying Anything," is an exhibition of two artists, Kelly Maron and MM Robinson, who are skeptical of the communicative abilities of images in the current cultural environment. In Robinson's view, the symbolic function of images has been abused in our media-saturated culture to the point of displacing meaning with mere association. In his hyperactive ink jet compositions, images loaded with associations are placed with unrelated or contradictory elements, forming dense constellations of images competing for an elusive cognitive foothold. By contrast, Kelly Maron's self portraiture is reserved and sparse. Presented as grids of nearly identical shots, the images focus on nuance - a head positioned slightly lower, a part half of one inch to the left. However, Maron has eschewed the practice of expressing one's self as a person or even as a projected identity. She prefers instead to present her own image as a pure object, expressionless and serialized into anonymity. Like Robinson, Maron puts a potentially meaningful subject in play only to let it die on the vine, refusing it a role as anything but pure data. official web press release. http://nabgallery.org/mattkelly.html
An opening reception for the artists will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2006 from 5-9 PM and the show will continue through Saturday April 22, 2006.
Hours: Usually Saturdays 12-5 or by appointment. (Free admission)
During the conference, the gallery will also be open during the following times: Saturday 6-9 is the official public reception.

Martha Strawn: Across the Thresholds of India (Knight Gallery)
Prince Thomas: Interstitial Spaces (Middleton McMillan Gallery)
The Light Factory is proud to present an exhibition that has been twenty years in the making, Across the Threshold of India by Martha Strawn – also a founding member of The Light Factory. Live threshold painting will be surrounded by 100 well crafted color and gelatin silver prints from Strawn’s visual ecology.
Prince Thomas, an artist who is simultaneously East Indian and American, reflects his cultural negotiations through the digital photographic and video medium. Interstitial Spaces focuses on the divisive places in popular culture and his own constructed identity. By using his own image in comparison to others, Thomas’ work leads to investigations of multiculturalism, race, and privilege.

BOUND/UNBOUND: The Dialogue Between Printmaking and the Art of the Book

The artwork in "Bound/Unbound", much of it created specifically for the exhibition, has been selected from the wide pool of Philadelphia artists and collections. Some of the artwork will be easily recognizable as a “book” or a “print”. Other work–-that which takes printmaking and the art of the book as a jumping-off point for interdisciplinary exploration–may challenge your assumptions about these art forms. In current artistic practice, the boundaries between one medium and another are less important than achieving an artist’s vision. Printmaking and book arts offer a vast array of tools for achieving this vision, whether on their own or in combination with other ways of making art. The artwork in this exhibition demonstrates the profound potential of this interaction, and the breadth of achievement by contemporary artists in Philadelphia. -Robert Wuilfe, Exhibition Curator

The National Museum of American History presents
Honky Tonk: Country Music Photographs by Henry Horenstein, 1972-1981
March 11 - Sept. 5, 2006
Photographer Henry Horenstein captured the end of an era of country music as the first and second generation of country music stars were making their last tours, and a new generation of listeners and performers were embracing them. This exhibition of photographs will depict the fans and performers of country music and the places where they met-outdoor music parks, parking lots, bars and of course, the Grand Ole Opry.

The paths traveled by Terri Warpinski and Garry Fritz intersected in 1998 and joined in 2001. The happy accident of their collaboration has led to a case of artistic double vision in which each of their approaches and viewpoints was altered by their interaction and resonance with the other. Terri and Garry conceived of this exhibition as the means (or, as an excuse!) to move deeper into a collaborative engagement in the creation of their work.
This all changed with Garry’s sudden death. Today, almost two years later, the essential premise is carrying forward, but necessarily altered by the unpredictability of life. Terri continues to celebrate the vision of her late husband through exhibiting his images and, through her own work embodies and continues the dialogue once shared with Garry.
The path that led Garry and Terri to their intersection was a route shared by others -- intersections, impacts, influences and confluences occurred in abundance. While acknowledging the initial purposes of the double vision proposal, this show builds upon that particular relational phenomena and draws together a larger circle of shared influences – a circle of unique individuals united in place[site] – a circle of artists share much in common with the others[sight]– a circle of friends summoned together, in part, by one who is gone [cite].

Claudia Katz and Jen Sens: borders between dreams and reality
March 11, 2006 - April 8, 2006
The genre of Magical Realism is celebrated and captured in a new photographic
exhibition. Claudia Katz and Jen Sens open The Borders Between Dreams and Reality on
Saturday March 11, 2006 at the Miami Center for Photographic Arts.
The show exhibits forty pieces of un-manipulated photography depicting notions of romantic reality. Excerpts from novels in the style of Magical Realism, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad) by Gabriel García Márquez are paired with the images.
A select group of photographs from the Americas, South Africa and Italy comprise sentiments riddled with the mystery within reality. This exhibit visualizes the existence of both pre-colonial and post-industrial currents in the old and new world.
Documentary photographers, Katz and Sens join their international experiences to highlight
metaphors, relationships, the strange and poetic in the everyday.

MICHENER ART MUSEUM PRESENTS ‘ANSEL ADAMS: CELEBRATION OF GENIUS’
February 18 - May 14, 2006
Ansel Adams is among the few photographers in history whose name and work enjoy world-wide recognition. The Michener is the only venue in the mid-Atlantic states to host this spectacular exhibition. nspired by the 100th anniversary of Adams’s birth in 2002, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film revisited its extensive collection of Adams’s work, creating a new exhibition of 150 photographs that reflects Adams’s full career. While many come to know Adam’s work through widely published books, postcards, posters and calendars, relatively few have actually seen his lushly printed original images. His stunning landscapes and intimate still lifes of nature continue to captivate viewers. Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius is sponsored by Anthony & Sylvan Pools, Thomas L. Newman, Wachovia Securities, Sylvan Properties, Inc., Heath’s Service, Inc., and Wetherill Opticians, Inc.
The James A. Michener Art Museum is an independent, non-profit institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting and exhibiting the art and cultural heritage of the Bucks County, Pennsylvania region. In addition to hosting a changing schedule of exhibitions from around the country, the Museum is home to a world-class collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings. The museum offers a diverse program of educational activities that seeks to develop a lifelong involvement in the arts.

DOCUMENT: Contemporary Social Documentary Work from Greater Boston |
02/02 - 03/26/06 |
The Photographic Resource Center in Boston is pleased to present a group exhibition showcasing recent social documentary work from Boston on Boston as seen through the eyes of 9 emerging and early midcareer photographers. The exhibition aims to spotlight a new generation of local documentary photographers by considering a variety of projects as well as their approaches to social documentary and the “document.” Perhaps most importantly, the show will also underline what we can do after the picture is taken. Boston has a long tradition of documentary work and these contemporary photographers build upon this foundation.
The 8 projects highlighted in DOCUMENT include Mariliana Arvelo & James Patten’s (Cambridge, MA), color and "tactile” photographs of the deaf-blind community in Greater Boston; Claire Becket's (Jamaica Plain, MA) study of the Massachusetts National Guard; Suzi Camarata's (Boston, MA) work with Mission Hill Main Street program; and Christopher Churchill's (Amesbury, MA) portraits of the Patrick O’Hearn Elementary School in Dorchester. Additional featured projects include Lisa Kessler's (Boston, MA) study of the church abuse crisis in Boston; Surendra Lawoti's (Somerville, MA) portraits of Somerville firefighters; Michael Manning's (Cambridge, MA) photoessay on a group of homeless people in Chinatown; and Amber Davis Tourlentes's (Somerville, MA) document of local gay-parented families.
DOCUMENT is held in conjunction with the Boston University Art Gallery’s exhibition A Photographic Portrait of Boston, 1840-1865 (February 10 - April 2, 2006) and will coincide with the College Art Association’s (CAA) national conference held in Boston, February 22-25, 2006. The BU exhibition features early, historic photographs taken by Boston photographers of Boston and Bostonians from four major Boston photographic archives—the Boston Athenaeum, the Boston Public Library, Historic New England, and the Massachusetts Historical Society. In addition, BU’s School of Visual Arts’s 808 Gallery is hosting a New England Regional BFA Exhibition for CAA (February 14-25, 2006) featuring work by 14 area art programs.

February 1–May 15, 2006
Photographs of Szarkowski’s native Midwest (1943–62) and of a farm in upstate New York (1983–2002) impart a sense of history, place, and the way Americans once regarded the land. Szarkowski is one of the most influential photography curators and critics of the twentieth century. Now the hidden half of his lifetime of artistic work is finally given the attention it deserves.

FIFTY YEARS ON THE FRONTLINE - PHILIP JONES GRIFFITHS
Jan. 27 - April 14, 2006
Philip Jones-Griffiths' has produced unforgettable photographs for over five decades on the front lines of world conflict. Tackling love, death, frivolity, politics and violence, Griffiths' photographs comment profoundly on virtually every aspect of human emotion. The exhibition traces Griffiths compelling journey through the British presence in Northern Ireland, colonialism in Rhodesia, the Algerian & Yom Kippur wars, the Vietnam War, and, both in the United States and in Viet Nam, the post-war era. It is a powerful collection of black-and-white photographs presented in installation format.

Karl Blossfeldt and Kim Kauffman |
01/22 - 03/10/06 |
Karl Blossfeldt and Kim Kauffman is an exhibition featuring 20 photogravures by turn-of-the-twentieth-century German photographer, Karl Blossfeldt, presented alongside 17 contemporary, full-color prints by Michigan artist, Kim Kauffman. The exhibition is on display at New Visions Gallery in Marshfield Clinic, January 22-March 10, 2006.
Karl Blossfeldt's place in art history is firmly established by the thousands of photographs he made of plants and plant forms. Following the 19th century German tradition of natural philosophy, Blossfeldt believed that “the plant must be valued as a totally artistic and architectural structure.” This philosophy drove Blossfeldt, beginning in 1899 in Berlin, to dedicate 30 years photographing thousands of leaves, seed pods, stems, flowers, buds and other plant parts in a scientific, yet extremely beautiful manner. He then used the prints as part of his teaching at the College of Arts and Crafts in Berlin.
New Visions Gallery's Karl Blossfeldt and Kim Kauffman exhibition offers a special opportunity to investigate prints created using a rare photographic process compellingly juxtaposed against prints incorporating modern technology.
New Visions Gallery is a nonprofit community art museum that exists to promote public awareness and appreciation of the arts, especially the visual arts. Housed in Marshfield Clinic, New visions Gallery is uniquely placed so that each day thousands of people are daily exposed to the museum and its programming.

Oculorium Gallery Project Series
January 21-April 15, 2006
Opening Reception: January 21, 2006, 7-9pm
Jacalyn Lopez Garcia's photographic series reveals the harsh realities of desert living and critically examines the relationship between some of the "past" and "present" outside improvement strategies on the lifestyles of Colonia residents. The dream of economic independence and a better life draws immigrants and migrants to these Colonias, but they often survive in harsh living conditions that make day-to-day life a full-time job. To bring further clarity and a new level of understanding to this documentary series, researchers (including Garcia herself) conducted interviews with the Colonia residents to document their life experiences. The results of this portion of the documentary project, as well as the photographs, an her video collection "Cultural Crossings" have been incorporated into an interactive website that will be released on the CMP webserver accessible at http://www.cmp.ucr.edu beginning January 21st.

Laura Kleger: Home Front
January 20 through April 2, 2006
Charleston Heights Arts Center will show artist Laura Kleger’s color photographs from her “Neighborhood Watch” and “Patriot Memory” series in an exhibition titled “Home Front,” from January 20 through April 2. “Home Front” marks the first time these two bodies of work are shown together, creating a dual-sided portrait – the public and the private – of the social landscape in post-Sept. 11 America. “Neighborhood Watch” offers quiet tableaus of the culturally emblematic single-family home, using the visual uncanny to address the extent to which global instability has infiltrated our everyday environments. “Patriot Memory” presents photographs of historical and commemorative American sites, encouraging viewers to consider how national identity is formed and transmitted with a salon-style installation.

Photographic Resource Center (PRC) presents
Group Portrait
Nov. 18, 2005-Jan. 22, 2006
The PRC is pleased to present a group show that highlights emerging and mid-career photographers who engage and challenge the genre of narrative and group portraiture. As we approach the holidays, when family and friends gather, it seems apt to consider the group portrait—a genre that traverses the diverse fields of fine art, commercial, and vernacular photography as well as painting. Featured artists include Julie Blackmon (Springfield, MO), Ben Gest (Chicago, IL), Jessica Todd Harper (Wynnewood, PA), Amy Montali (Northampton, MA), and Sage Sohier (Brookline, MA).

At the height of his career, his work was included in several prestigious exhibitions in New York, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and received praise from critics, art historians, and renowned photographers. Widely recognizd during his lifetime, Swank has gone unnoticed since his death.

The exhibition, The Allen Sisters: Pictorial Photographs of New England, 1885 - 1920, on view at the Florence Griswold Museum from September 17, 2005 through January 8, 2006, is a tribute to the sisters' artistic legacy, which has been lost from view for most of a century. Although few people today have seen the depth and breadth of their work, in 1901 the Allen sisters were praised as being among “The Foremost Women Photographers in America.” Organized by Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield, Massachusetts, the fifty platinum prints offer idealized photographs of country scenes, figure and child studies, and landscapes of New England, California, and Great Britain. To complement the photographs, works drawn from the Florence Griswold Museum’s expansive collection of Tonalist and Impressionist paintings will also be on view. The visual and thematic similarities between these works provide a provocative new context in which to consider the Allens' haunting compositions. The installation at the Florence Griswold Museum is generously sponsored by Xerox.

Saga: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Photographs 1970-2005
Sept. 10, 2005 - Jan. 8, 2006
Exhibition Opening: Friday, September 9 from 6-9 pm
Arno Minkkinen is an internationally known Finnish-American photographer who has been photographing his nude body in the landscape and in interior settings since the early 1970s. The resulting unmanipulated photographs are astonishing in the way Minkkinen maneuvers his body so that it echoes the land formation or appears in surreal juxtaposition to it. He teaches at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell . This traveling mid-career retrospective is co-curated by A.D. Coleman, well-known photography critic, and Todd Brandow, founder of the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, Paris. They have selected 120 prints representing Minkkinenís career from 1970 to the present, including images taken in many parts of the world. Saga is accompanied by an illustrated exhibition catalogue. The DeCordova site coordinator is Director of Curatorial Affairs Rachel Rosenfield Lafo.

Deciphering Personal Altars Through Pinhole Photography
an exhibition of color photographs made with a pinhole camera
Sept. 10 - Oct 5, 2005
While residing for several years in South Louisiana, Petit became aware of the varied personal collections, or as she describes them "eclectic home altars," of the community. The Artists + Architects Gallery will exhibit the current work in her ongoing project SOUTH LOUISIANA SOUL: Deciphering Personal Altars Through Pinhole Photography. The project, originally funded by a 2002 Canada Council grant, was initiated by Petit to apply her photographic vocabulary to the exploration of a specific place and culture.
