Bryan Schutmaat
This exhibition will present a selection of 23 works by American photographer Bryan Schutmaat from the collection Grays the Mountain Sends.
From 2010-2012, Schutmaat traveled extensively through the small towns and mining landscapes of the western US, particularly those of the Rocky Mountains, photographing their inhabitants, the geography, and the interactions between the two—an aesthetic reverberation that makes Grays the Mountain Sends so uniquely striking. Poetically rather than politically driven, the images are less a documentary series than a narrative one.
Published as a monograph in 2013, Grays the Mountain Sends received critical acclaim and was acquired by the libraries at MoMA and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Schutmaat was awarded the Aperture Portfolio Prize in 2013
