"Look Out" will explore the prominent role and characteristics of photographic media within international contemporary art in an age in which communication can be nearly instantaneous and the audience is increasingly global. Countries represented by themes and / or presenters include Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam.

Installation practices, scale changes and seriality are transforming our spatial experience and temporal understanding of the photographic image. Presentation techniques now range from 19th century applied emulsions to digital applications and screen technologies; approaches extend from the overtly stage-managed and highly personalized to an impression of hyper-objectivity.

How does our reading of the photographic image change in these various formal, social, and multidisciplinary contexts? Along with the “decisive moment”, what are the temporal possibilities that are being explored between the still and moving image? In contrast to global homogeneity, what cultural, political or geographical differences prevail within contemporary photography?

Our conference will be held in dynamic Miami, Florida; a city internationally renowned for its cultural diversity and contemporary art (Art Basel Miami, major collections and museums and a vibrant local scene) – and sub-tropical sun, art deco and South Beach. Please join us in March 2007!

Garry B Fritz Imagemaker Award

susan collinsCongratulations to Dr. Susan Collins, the 2007 recipient of the Garry B Fritz Imagemaker Award. The award was established in 2004 to honor the memory of Garry B Fritz, an SPE member with a long-time interest in photography. It is funded by a gift through the Oregon Community Foundation. A $1,000 honorarium is presented to an imagemaker presenting at an SPE national conference for the first time. This award will be presented to Dr. Collins at the conference in Miami.

Dr. Collins’ recent work includes the use of web cameras installed at remote sites in England and Scotland. The webcams are programmed to record images one pixel per second, so that a whole image is created pixel by pixel collected over 21.33 hours. www.susan-collins.net/fenlandia

Miami Art Scene

Miami is a world class art city and we highly recommend that you come early and stay late to visit the wealth of museums (such as Miami Art Central, Museum of Contemporary Art, Rubell Family Art Collection, Bass Museum of Art, Miami Art Museum, Lowe Art Museum and Wolfsonian) and galleries (including Wynwood Art/Design District near the hotel, Coral Gardens, NOMI, Little Havana and South Beach Art Districts). Please come early and stay late to tour the cultural diversity of Miami. Featured exhibitions and events will take place at The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse with special reception on Friday 7-10p, buses will be provided; other exhibitions include the "SPE Multicultural Caucus Exhibition" at the University of Miami CAS Gallery; "Jacques-Henri Lartigue: A Boy, A Camera, an Era" at the Miami Dade Main Public Library; and "Viajeros: North American Artist/Photographers’ Images of Cuba" at Miami Dade College with reception on Saturday 7-9p. There are many entertainment options in Miami. We have collected a few of them.

Professional Portfolio Sessions & Student Portfolio Critiques
& Sunday Portfolio "Walk Through"

de souzaThe program previously known as “Portfolio Reviews” will continue in Miami with some fine-tuning. The goal of providing a low-key environment for artists to get valuable feedback on their artistic work at no cost remains the same. Based on membership feedback, the name and structure of these sessions will change to better serve our established and emerging artist members. Two separate tracks will be offered: Professional Portfolio Sessions on Friday will be reserved for professionals and Student Portfolio Critiques on Saturday will be dedicated to students.** To register please check the appropriate box on the conference registration form.

This opportunity remains free of charge to registered conference attendees though SPACE IS LIMITED. Participants will receive two twenty-minute sessions. Early registration is highly encouraged to participate in this program. Conference receipts indicate whether registrants are included or if the sessions are FULL. Please note that this is not the only opportunity to share work and get feedback at the conference. Casual sharing is highly encouraged throughout the conference weekend. Another stellar opportunity to share work is on Sunday – so plan to stick around all morning.

Sunday Portfolio Sharing is a popular event at our national conferences. To optimize the opportunity, SPE is inviting local curators, collectors and gallery owners, as well as our own professional curators, collectors, historians and scholars to join us for a new style of “Walk-Through” Sharing.

To accommodate our growing numbers, we will have a larger space this year. To encourage participation by all attendees, separate spaces for professionals and students will be provided.** We ask all participants to share tables with two or three others. Bring your portfolios to Miami and expose your work to new audiences of art movers and shakers.

**Regarding Portfolio Sessions & Critiques and the Sunday “Walk-Through” - Professional status is determined by membership level. All levels of membership are considered professional, except student. Participation in professional activities will require membership and conference registration beyond the student level.

Silent Auction

Every year SPE awards a number of student scholarships at the national conference. The money for the SPE Student Awards is raised primarily through the silent auction and member donations to the scholarship fund. Thanks to the generosity of members, sponsors and friends of SPE who donate products to the auction, the upcoming auction in Miami will include books, photography supplies and many other items. Silent auction items will be on view and open for bids in the Exhibits Fair (Symphony Ballroom) from 8 am to 3 pm on Friday, March 16 and from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, March 17.

Once you bid on an item, please note the section and table where the item is on display. There will be volunteers in the silent auction area Friday and Saturday to help with questions.

CLOSING: The silent auction will close on Saturday afternoon in three phases, beginning at 3:00 pm. Section closings will be announced over the public address system. To determine if you have won upon closure of a section, go to the section and table where you placed a bid and see if your name has been circled on the pink section of the bid form. If you are the winner for an item, you will need to proceed to the cashier area 15 minutes after the section closes to pay for and pick up your item. You must be present to claim and pay for your items. The cashier’s station will close at 5:30. Any unclaimed items will be forfeited. Participation is open to all conference attendees.

We want to thank the donors for their generous support of SPE, and we also want to thank all those who participate in making this fundraiser a success!
